The Wellington green gecko is threatened and is classified as being in gradual decline. It is only found in the southern half of the North Island.
Wellington green geckos are green with pale green, white or yellow spots along their backs and the inside of their mouth is vivid blue. The gecko is rarely seen because of their effective camouflage and declining populations.
This week Wellington City Council partnered with Greater Wellington Regional Council and NEXT Foundation to work towards the goal of making Wellington, New Zealand’s first predator-free city.
The aim is to eradicate rats and stoats and increase birds, lizards and invertebrates – which is great news for the Wellington green gecko!
