Today’s photo is of a wētāpunga, a very large insect that, when fully grown, can weigh more than a mouse or sparrow.

The species is unique to New Zealand and has only survived on Hauturu-o-Toi/Little Barrier Island on the outer edge of the Hauraki Gulf.

To celebrate Conservation WeekAuckland Zoo is hosting “close-up” wētā encounters in an effort to raise awareness of the conservation of our native wildlife.

Visitors to Auckland Zoo during Conservation Week will be able to get close up with tuatara and learn about the various threats our native wildlife face.

Conservation Week takes place 10–18 September.

This year is all about encouraging New Zealanders to get on board to help explore, celebrate and protect the unique natural environment here in beautiful Aotearoa.
