In June DOC ran a competition to name the Royal Cam albatross chick at Taiaroa Head. After hundreds of public votes, the chick was officially named Moana last month.

Aleece and Dakota from Tainui School won the naming competition and visited the Royal Albatross Centre to meet Moana yesterday. Their class shared in the experience and visited the centre too.

Taiaroa Head put on a beautiful day for the pair. DOC Ranger Lyndon Perriman and DOC’s Threatened Species Ambassador Nicola Toki took the girls out onto the nature reserve to see Moana up close.

Moana is likely to fledge around mid September, unlikely to touch land again for  4 to 10 years!
