Today’s photo is the fluke (tail) of a humpback whale spotted in the Cook Strait.

Humpback whales are easy to identify and are well known for their spectacular breaching and beautiful, complex songs.

Humpback whale fluke.

Humpback whales are frequent visitors to the coastal waters of New Zealand. They undertake long distance migrations between their summer feeding grounds in Antarctica and their winter breeding grounds in tropical waters.

If you spot a humpback whale DOC’s Nadine Bott would appreciate being sent any fluke photos so she can include them in the New Zealand humpback whale catalogue. You can email photos through to nbott@doc.govt.nz
