Over the weekend eighty mōhua/yellowhead were successfully moved from Chalky Island to Coal Island in Fiordland National Park.
Today’s photo is of one of those birds being banded, before its release onto the 1,189 hectare island.
Mōhua being banded prior to release on Coal Island
Led by the Coal Island Charitable Trust, in partnership with DOC and the Mōhua Charitable Trust, the translocation will help to re-establish mōhua numbers in the area.
Aside from this mōhua translocation, 69 South Island robins and 27 Haast kiwi have also been successfully released onto Coal Island. Read the Mōhua move to Coal Island media release.
