With more than 145 kilometres of mountain biking trails, Rotorua is known by many as the ‘Mountain Biking Capital of New Zealand’.
Unsurprisingly, many of the staff here at the DOC Rotorua Office are keen mountain bikers and we’re pretty excited about our city hosting the first stage of this year’s Crankworx World Tour.
However, I am finding there are just as many people who aren’t quite sure what all the fuss is about. So, let me tell you. It’s a big deal!
Rotorua is known by many as the ‘Mountain Biking Capital of New Zealand’
Crankworx is a global celebration of mountain biking. It attracts the best mountain biking pro-athletes from around the world to compete in slopestyle, downhill and enduro events. There are also family friendly children’s competitions.
For the first 12 years the festival was held only in its hometown of Whistler, Canada and then, four years ago, a second stop was added at Les Deux Alpes, France.
Now, in 2015, Crankworx is set to become a three-stop world tour with Rotorua providing the only southern hemisphere destination on the tour.

The Rotorua event will be held over five days from 25 – 29 March and will be topped off with a music festival featuring some of New Zealand’s top artists.
Crankworx is a great opportunity to showcase mountain bike tracks across New Zealand to an international audience. The more people we can get out on our mountain bike trails enjoying trails, the better!

DOC rangers with a passion for mountain biking will be at Crankworx with oodles of information about our most famous conservation mountain biking trails like the Moerangi Trail, 42 Traverse, the Timber Trail and the Queen Charlotte.
